happiness in a time of midterms

This has made me happy everyday since I found it. The best part about this song is the fact that the chorus is taken from Levi Johnston’s myspace. Awesome.

Levi Johnston’s Blues

Current Complaints:

Kansas is so very cold right now.

I am sick of school.

and I am unhappy with the university’s ability to lose an application submitted online.

FYI: I am tired of being underestimated because I am young and a female. I am not dumb, and I do not enjoy being spoken to like I do not understand the English language or like I am a child. Do not censor yourself because I am female; if you cannot say it in front of a woman, you should probably not be saying it at all. I do not disrespect you, so please show me the same courtesy.

Bright side: less than 48 hours until a five day mini-vacation with the best friends and boyfriend.

See you on the other side of FALL BREAK 09.

3 words: I Love Fall

a list of why I love the fall:

  • the look of golden brown leaves on bright green grass is amazing
  • hoodys are the best
  • KU is at its finest in the fall
  • my birthday is technically in the fall
  • pumpkin patch is a family tradition, only remember one year in my life we did not go due to my 1st kidney stone
  • thanksgiving
  • has both KU football and basketball going on at the same time
  • usually means a trip to the OC (this year the OC is coming here)
  • 60 degrees with sunshine is perfect
  • garden state
  • open windows
  • pumpkin everything
  • bonfires
  • the best apples of the year

It is that fun time of year for college students around the country- MIDTERMS! I personally have 4, and have 2 papers due. (1 test and 1 paper have been completed at this point) Weeks like this one and the next make me question why I am in school. But then I have days like Thursday that make me want to get a PhD which means 6 more years of school after I graduate in a year and a half (10 years of school total). The thought of that makes me want to crawl in a hole and die, but you know that whole helping people live better lives thing takes over and makes 10 years of schooling seem worthwhile. Pretty sure my lovely roommate thought I was insane when I told her, oh well. She usually feels that way, I think.

I would like to take a moment and mention the fact that my friend, Sarah, is studying abroad this year in Africa. Right now she is in Mali, and next semester she will be in Cameroon. Her blog amazes me, you should probably check it out. It makes me want to go to Africa and become completely immersed in a new and totally different culture.

I was never a puddle-jumping child (getting my pant legs wet has been a pet peeve of mine for years and years) however, I realized today while wearing my rainboots just how much fun jumping in puddles is, and it makes me kind of sad that it has taken almost 21 years to realize that.

Things that have happened since September 9:

skipped classes to hang out with cousins that live in LA, absolutely worth it; worked a lot, really like the people I work with and like my job over all; celebrated 3.5 year anniversary with my boyfriend (by that I mean, it happened and due to the 2000 miles between us, nothing was done);  joined the Anthropology Club, only non-Anthropology major (I’m minoring) in the club; KU football and basketball players got in a fight in the middle of campus, got some national news coverage; saw an amazing play, Tell Tale Electric Poe;  went to Warhol and Peace at the Spencer Museum, had a real photobooth picture taken- kind of awesome.

Next Wednesday marks the beginning of Fall Break 09. Normally that means I hop on a plane to California, but not this year. This year my California boyfriend comes back to his roots. It will be a jam-packed weekend of haunted houses (not excited AT ALL), Ren Fest, Pumpkin Patch, Louisburg Cider Mill, Late Night, Where the Wild Things Are, and some general hanging out. A trip to the chocolatier and waldo pizza might make the list at some point also. Needless to say- I’m quite excited except for the haunted houses.

I will leave you with some fall-ish pictures. They are all old because I cannot seem to find time to take pictures these days. I hope fall break will allow me some picture taking time.

nothing like the hill

As I drove to work last Saturday, through the streets of Lawrence, KS, I realized that there is no other school I could possibly imagine loving the way I love KU. I had to be at work six hours before kick off for the season opener, so as I drove to the stadium on one of the most beautiful days Kansas has to offer, I took in my surroundings. I drove by the Chi O fountain and saw masses of blue shirts on campus; I drove by the Triangle house and heard music blasting and the smell of beer mixed with burgers on the grill; I finally (after about 20 min of searching) found a place to park and walked from Jayhawk Blvd to the stadium- as I passed the Campanile and saw the tailgaters all over the hill it hit me- this is exactly where I belong because there is absolutely nothing like the hill. I do not know where I will end up two years from now, but I do know that I doubt I will get the same feeling of absolute happiness when I drive around that town on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

summer has come and gone.
my mom turned 60, though she does not look a day over 39.
hit up schlitterbaun; while it is not even remotely finished we managed to have some fun and bake in the sun for 8 hours.
a couple ice cream outtings, the conclusion of twin peaks, and many hours spent in kansas city taking pictures later and the summer was over.

back to school came and went.
only one 300+ level class; serves me right for putting off my dumb gen eds.
bio 100: 1000 freshman gathered in one room, 3 days a week for 1 hour per day- its a miracle I have not gotten swine flu. [knock on wood]
the semester is good so far; classes are pretty interesting.
absolutely love my abnormal psych class. Dr. Steve Illardi is amazing. Must take more classes from him.
[for those that know me well, you know I have loved "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel since Mr. Holt's 8th grade US History class; well when I walked into class on the 2nd day and "We Didn't Start the Fire" was blasting I knew it was going to be a good semester!]

I have a job. I work for the people that run the concession stands at all the athletic events. Besides having to be at work at 6am for the 11am football games and having to convert all my coworkers from MU to KU, it should be pretty sweet.

sleepytime shannon

next time: picturesssss!

an update; nothing more

it has been awhile since my last post.

in that time, i had my first real ‘trip to the lake’ and it was awesome.
my eldest brother turned 30 and it was strange.
i saw a couple mediocre movies (bruno and public enemies), a good movie (harry potter) and a new favorite movie (away we go).
had a couple full days in Kansas City with my boyfriend.
enjoyed a lovely trip to the KC Zoo with some friends.
went to the fringe fest in KC and saw BOOM!

those are the high points of july.
i’m choosing not to include any low points because frankly you needn’t know.

michael jackson is still dead.
but for some reason they still don’t know how he died.

i have less than a month left before returning to the hilly campus of KU.
at this point, I really have no idea what my schedule will end up looking like by the time classes start.

i will soon be bored all the time again, and updates will be worthwhile and more often, until then, this is all you have.

Lots of Love,
Shannon

Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough

In the time since we last met the world has changed:
Michael Jackson has died.

While I was not alive during the peak of his career, I knew and loved his music. I remember dancing around the house to it as a little kid. I remember listening to Beat It on the tape provided by the car dealership where my mom got her minivan, ironically it was Crystler which also just died. We would do dance warm up and practices to Michael Jackson songs. And in the more recent past my dear friend Cori, without fail, would tell us every single time she heard a Michael Jackson song that, “[she] did a dance to this song!!!”

While the man was far from perfect and was in most ways just straight up creepy; he was incredibly gifted musically and broke down boundaries for so many artists. He has inspired so many of today’s greats and will continue to do so. He lived a hard life, never out of the public eye, never allowed to be the child he wanted to be; hopefully in death he can find the peace he’s always longed for.
1958-2009

Other news:
O-M-G Jon and Kate Plus 8. They need to get those kids off TV and do everything in their power to not have a very public and terrible divorce.  I can say that I am 100% done watching them if they continue that show as a Jon plus 8 and Kate plus 8.

Words to the wise: Avoid the Great Lenexa BBQ unless you know someone competing in it. Especially on the hottest day of the summer. The Blueberry Patch is not open on Sunday. Waffle House is amazing. The Duck Derby is pretty entertaining. Especially if you drop a shoe in Brush Creek.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my good friends the Varsity Athletics on their 2nd Championship Win on Sunday night.

Also I would like to congratulate Jack and crew on their most recent contest win of $500.  Watch Video Here

Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July weekend.

Love,
SL

ssssuuuummmmmmmmeeeerrrr

the school year ended with a bang.
and without buck night for me, because I’m a baby and didn’t like the rain.

after a solid 4 days of hanging out with people and seeing old friends, my kidneys decided that was enough fun and gave me a large kidney stone, my 5th in 8 years. lovely start to the summer. it was blown up and I can only drink water and lemonade- suck.

online classes are not as cool as they seem. they take way more time than a real class and do not provide nearly enough information. also if anyone has taken psych 102 after taking psych 310 (as I am doing), I feel bad for you because its the same work just dumbed down.

I went a got myself a pretty sweet job until mid August. Answering phones for $9/hr. Literally, that is all I’m doing. Picked my schedule and do not even have to quit because the job ends in August anyway. LOVE IT.

I have been terrible about updating this thing.
That will change.

GARAGE SALE WEEKEND! = Lafferty trip down memory lane

my dad trying to sell the toys I am not old enough to part with yet.
my brother dressing like he did in 1998.
my mom sitting in the thousand degree garage til all hours with her green and pink price stickers, just like when I was 10.
(for the record this is the first garage sale we’ve had since I was 10)

Saw some old friends this week.
Old friends as in they were there the day I was born.
It was great seeing them considering a large part of my youth was spent down the street in their house.
Every time I see them it makes me wish we were as close as we were once.

I world also like to note that June 2 marked my half birthday.
My half birthday marked 6 months until I am considered a full fledged adult by the University of Kansas.
(The University of Kansas does not truly consider you an adult until 21, just read their new policies)

I have been majorly lacking on the picture taking front.
That needs to change.

I want an adventure.
and I plan to have one.

I am in fact HALFWAY DONE with college.
It went crazy fast.

I vividly remember graduating from high school 2 years ago and now I am only 2 years away from walking down the hill.

The Hill and Campanile

It might be time to begin truly figuring out what to do after walking down that glorious hill.

Lovingly,

Twitter is oddly amusing.

StudyBlue.com is amazing.

I am very excited for Buck Night AND Fireworks on Friday.

where I want to be

I am currently hating finals a whole lot.

Here is where I am:

Here is where I want to be:

Time for a vacation.
Or time for a summer math class and being unemployed? (bleh)

Expect updates this week. It’s way better than studying for TH&F 380, HWC 205, or PSYC 333.

BTW- Justin Timberlake on SNL was exceptional.

Luv,

Procrastinating Shannon
